B.U.S. is six plays, start to finish in 24 hours.  We’re talking written, directed, memorized and performed all in less time than it takes AmazonPrime to ship the last season of Game of Thrones.  And this Friday, April 5th, forty writers, directors, actors, and artists will do just that.

Bricolage’s annual fundraiser is inspired by a 90 minute Pittsburgh bus ride.  Performing artists travel the route, draw inspiration from the ride, and create six different 10 minute plays.

This year’s artists include: Onyx Award winning playwright Vanessa German; PhD literary artist Tameka Cage-Conley; Pittsburgh Post-Gazette “best of” actress Elena Alexandratos; and dozens more. Award winning writer and actress Rosemarie Wilson also brings her skill to the stage, next to legendary conductor and composer Paul Guggenheimer.

You don’t want to miss this event which features food, music, and a silent auction in Bricolage’s signature style.  Early ticket buyers always get the best seats, so reserve today.

Something spectacular is coming to Pittsburgh this April—There’s Something About Fontina, led by contemporary ballet artist Alan Obuzor. Pointe shoes, combat boots, music by Regina Spektor and the choreography of Texture’s own Kelsey Bartman culminate in one of Pittsburgh’s most entertaining ballet shows of the year.

Named as one of Dance Magazine’s “Top 25 To Watch,” Alan Obuzor has a long history of amazing dance performance.  When most students were starting their senior year in high school, he received a contract to join PBT’s professional Company.  Cutting his teeth on some of history’s most iconic shows—The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Carmina Burana, and Divertimento 15— Obuzor has won numerous awards and collaborated with talent from all over Pittsburgh.

Texture’s Kelsey Bartman is also dedicated to the craft. She is a co-creator of the Works In Progress project, has choreographed for Nashville Ballet, and danced in Balanchine’s FourTemperatments and Paul Vasterling’s Carmina Burana.

In addition, Jamie Murphy and Renee Smith of the Murphy/Smith Dance Collective will premiere a new work, accompanied by the Texture dancers. Jamie has been seen at various festivals and the Pittsburgh Opera Cabaret. Renee’s choreography has been showcased on stages such as Evolve Productions and Pittsburgh Ballet Theater School’s graduate program.

Tickets are available through ShowClix and are $20 in advance of performances and $25 at the door. See you there.

Young Jean Lee’s approach to playwriting starts with a question: “What’s the last show in the world I would ever want to make?” When she finds the answer, Lee makes that show. The results are often brazen, frequently experimental, sometimes hilarious, and always adventurous.

Getting out of her comfort zone is how Lee forces herself to challenge her own assumptions and find new, unexpected sources of value. But Lee’s unorthodox approach doesn’t end there. She writes her plays in the middle of directing them, and she looks to her performers and artistic team for cues on how to revise plays.  She even brings the audience into the mix for additional feedback.

According to Lee, the goal of all this is “…to find ways to get past our audiences’ defenses against uncomfortable subjects and open people up to confronting difficult questions by keeping them disoriented and laughing.”

Lee has toured her shows in over twenty cities across the world. Now she’s adding Pittsburgh and the New Hazlett Theater to her list with UNTITLED FEMINIST SHOW.  Lee’s latest experiment, UNTITLED brings together six stars as charismatic as they are diverse.  Female performers from the worlds of theater, dance, cabaret, and burlesque worlds come together for a one-of-a-kind performance.

Mostly silent, the show celebrates the female form in all its shapes as it explores female identity.  Hilton Als over at The New Yorker  wrote that UNTITLED FEMINIST SHOW was one of his best theater experiences in all of 2012.

So what are you waiting for? Young Jean Lee’s UNTITLED FEMINIST SHOW opens and closes on March 30 at the New Hazlett Theater.  The show’s one night only, so get your tickets today.

The New Hazlett Theater invites emerging and mid-career performing artists from the western Pennsylvania region to submit proposals for inclusion in the upcoming Community Supported Art (CSA) program. Six performing artists (of any genre, including theater, dance, music, spoken word, performance art, etc.) will be selected through a competitive application process. Visit the application page for more information.

In an event that every Amigo’s fan should experience, seven talented musicians fuse rock to the original score from ¡Three Amigos!  In addition to this tribute, the event presents clips from Orion Czarnecki’s documentary that explores the legacy of the classic and includes musical performances from Guaracha and Miguel’s Mariachi Fiesta.  Watch Czarnecki interviewed on WTAE news promoting the event this Saturday.

We know their talent. Now the nationwide dance community is taking notice. Dance Magazine deemed Alan Obuzor, Texture Contemporary Ballet’s artistic director and resident choreographer, “25 to Watch” in 2013.  Karen Dacko, a writer for the magazine, wrote, “No visions of sugar plums for dancer/choreographer Alan Obuzor, whose prolific imagination draws on African rhythms, contemporary songs, and original scores. The vibrant mover with impeccable partnering skills applies his technical savvy to emotionally layered choreography while savoring the freedom of experimentation.”

She highlighted his work with the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Canton Ballet and his 39-work repertoire. Dacko said, “injuries induced the former PBT member to launch Texture Contemporary Ballet in 2011 as an outlet for himself and other artists craving a push-and-be-pushed creative environment. His achingly poignant Wisp, foreboding Taken, and irresistible Emwaby Mee shine, while the billowy Glimpse exemplifies his facility for crafting fluid ensemble works.”

More than eighty people attended the Theater’s first SpectiCast film screening of PINA. The diverse audience, including dancers, watched Pina Bausch’s choreography on the New Hazlett’s large screen.

The film was written and directed by Wim Wenders. He conceived a dance film like none seen before.  The movie put the audience deep inside Bausch’s playful, thrillingly unpredictable pieces. Sensual and visually stunning, PINA took us into her imaginative sets (a gliding monorail, a bare stage covered with chairs, a towering man-made waterfall), powerfully rendering the beauty and sheer physicality of the dancers.

SpectiCast distributes film, cultural arts events and alternative content to theatrical venues. We are considering screening more film offerings and we need your help.  Visit their website and tell us what you’d like to see at info@newhazletttheater.org.
