An Octoroon
Judge Peyton is dead, and his plantation Terrebone is in financial ruins. Peyton’s handsome nephew George arrives as heir apparent, and quickly falls in love with Zoe, a beautiful ‘octoroon’. But the dastardly M’Closky has other plans – for both Terrebone and Zoe.
This wildly imaginative work, Winner of the 2014 OBIE Award for Best New American Play, simultaneously gives us Dion Boucicault’s great 19th Century melodrama and its contemporary reverberations. An Octoroon invites us to laugh loudly at how naïve the old stereotypes now seem until nothing seems funny at all. It may be this decade’s most eloquent theatrical statement on race in America today.
*An Octoroon is recommended for mature audiences only.
