Music on the Edge presents: Bergamot Quartet and Ji Hye Jung
About the Event:
The Bergamot Quartet, a rising star on the American contemporary music scene, is joined by virtuoso percussionist Ji Hye Jung for a concert of new acoustic and electronic music. The event marks the world premiere of a kinetic, new multimedia project by Charles Peck, where the musicians perform impossible music by augmenting their live performance with video. The program will also include dynamic works by Tania León, Joseph Schwantner, and native Pittsburgher Reza Vali.
About Bergamot Quartet:
Bergamot Quartet is fueled by a passion for exploring and advocating for the music of living composers with creative programming, community-oriented audience building, and frequent commissioning. The quartet is in high demand as interpreters and co-creators of new music, having premiered hundreds of works by students of all ages and developed numerous significant new pieces with composers at the forefront of contemporary concert music. They maintain a full season each year of concerts ranging from DIY events to appearances at major venues. They have recently launched “Project Resonance” with composer/performer Dan Trueman, a multi-tiered project which will foster the creation and performance of new works for Bergamot playing a set of hardanger instruments (traditional Scandinavian 9-stringed folk instruments). As educators, Bergamot serves on faculty at New Music On The Point and Arts Letters and Numbers Creative Music Intensive. In 2025 they have conducted residencies with Tulane University, Manhattan School of Music, and Columbia University as well as served as the faculty ensemble for Wildflower Composers Festival.
Based in New York City, Bergamot Quartet is Ledah Finck and Sarah Thomas, violins; Martine Thomas, viola; and Irène Han, cello.
About Ji Hye Jung:
Praised as “spectacular” by the Los Angeles Times and “extraordinary” by the Ventura County Star, the Times describes percussionist Ji Hye Jung as “a centered player who can give the impression of being very still yet at all places at once”. Ms. Jung frequently performs with many of today’s most important conductors and instrumentalists. For six years she has served as principal percussionist with the west coast-based chamber music ensemble Camerata Pacifica, with whom she has premiered works by Bright Sheng and Huang Ruo. In 2015 Ji Hye Jung was named Associate Professor of Percussion at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music. An active educator and clinician, Jung has presented masterclasses at the Curtis Institute, the Peabody Conservatory, Rice University, Beijing’s Central Conservatory, and the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice, Poland.
As an artist endorser, she proudly represents Pearl/Adams instruments, Vic Firth sticks and mallets, and Zildjian cymbals.
