The New Hazlett Theater nurtures the arts and connects with the community. Arts presenters, producers, and artists rent the theater at affordable rates, for a range of programs. While predominantly still a rental facility, we have long desired to create our own programming. In 2013, we took the plunge and launched our CSA Performance Series, which is based on the Community Supported Agriculture model, a popular way for consumers to buy homegrown, seasonal food directly from farmers.
With the same buy-direct spirit, and keeping in mind our mission to incubate and cultivate the arts, we created a similar endeavor to support local artists. Community Supported Art is an exciting new model of a subscription series that supports local artists in the creation of new work and establishes new relationships with local patrons.
In the first year of the program, six performing artists of many genres were selected through a competitive application process. In addition to a stipend, each artist received one performance night with technicians, equipment, and staff. Interested patrons purchased ‘shares,’ and in return received a ticket to each performance of a new work created by an upcoming artist.
The project has since expanded with an upcoming sixth season in 2018-2019, with opportunities added for additional performers, technical theater artists, and mentors.
